Good Morning Surrey!

At about 6.30pm on a Friday, you can tell who’s trying to be romantic by how often they refresh the rail app. Somewhere between the school run, the A3, and a last-minute ā€œshall we just do pasta?ā€ text, Surrey asks you to plan twice.

So here’s your Weekender, calm and useful. The Ockley landslip, live flood checks, the Future Surrey restructure in plain English, plus a handful of things to do that don’t require a spreadsheet.

In today’s edition,

  • Banking hubs for Oxted and Godalming approved

  • Community: 11 Surrey organisations funded to tackle financial hardship

  • Weekend plans: yarn, theatre, snowdrops, and a late soul night if that’s your kind of Valentine’s

  • Trusted trades, plumbers and mobile mechanics

Let’s take a look.

— Prince Khurram

P.S. Our Monday Update leans more towards news, the Wednesday Midweek Brief balances news and events, and the Friday Weekender is lighter on news and fuller on events and Eat & Drink. We would really welcome your thoughts on this format and how we can improve The Surrey Digest for you.

News

Banking hubs for Oxted and Godalming

If you still use cash, or you just want a human being for a tricky banking question, this is good news for two towns, and mildly frustrating news for a couple of others.

  • Shared hubs offer counter services and staff from major banks on rotating days

  • Oxted and Godalming have been approved for new hubs

  • Leatherhead has been turned down

  • Cobham is losing its current facility at the Cedar Centre

National headlines, why they matter in Surrey

Nurses pay and progression in England

If you work in healthcare, or you’re relying on local services, this is one of those changes that shows up later as retention and staffing stability, not overnight miracles.

Fuel Finder and a digital driving licence trial

If you’re feeding a car on Surrey prices, the new Fuel Finder rules are meant to make pump prices easier to compare, and the digital licence trial is optional for now.

County Updates

Leatherhead Leisure Centre solar car port

If you use the leisure centre at weekends, expect a bit of fencing and a few extra loops of the car park while the work is in progress.

  • Around 33kWp of panels planned, generating roughly 25MWh per year

  • Works started 8 January 2026 and are due to last about eight weeks

  • EV chargers are offline during construction, with some bays relocated

  • Part of a wider council push to cut emissions and running costs

Community Digest

11 Surrey organisations funded to tackle financial hardship

If you, a neighbour, or a family member needs support, this is a useful pointer to where help is being strengthened, with a focus on preventing crisis rather than only responding after it lands.

Here’s what the funding supports.

  • Food support and community fridges

  • Warm hubs and community spaces offering advice and connection

  • Hardship and debt advice

  • Extra help for residents at risk of crisis

And Finally,

By Sunday, most of Surrey will have managed Valentine’s weekend the way we manage everything else, quietly, competently, and with at least one conversation about parking. Wherever you end up, snowdrops, theatre seats, a sofa and a cup of tea, hit reply and tell us what actually worked. We’ll take useful over perfect, every time.

Have a good weekend, Surrey.

Thank for reading. Let’s chat on Monday.
