Weekend Waterloo works to disrupt South Western Railway routes

South Western Railway is warning of major changes to services this weekend as engineers close the lines between London Waterloo and Clapham Junction. Most Surrey routes into Waterloo are affected, so itās worth planning ahead if youāre heading into London for work, family plans or a day out.
Lines between Waterloo and Clapham Junction closed on Sat 31 Jan and Sun 1 Feb.
Trains may start or terminate at different London stations or run via altered routes.
Services on Guildford, Woking and other mainline routes are subject to changes and possible rail replacement buses.
Journey times are likely to be longer and connections different from usual patterns.
If you have fixed plans in London this weekend, check your usual train hasnāt quietly vanished from the timetable.
540 new homes proposed between Ripley and Send

Developers have lodged early-stage plans for a major housing scheme at Grove Heath North, on land between Ripley and Send. The proposal is now at Environmental Impact Assessment scoping stage with Guildford Borough Council, setting out what would need to be assessed before any future planning application.
Outline plans for up to 540 homes north of the existing villages between Ripley and Send.
EIA scoping request sets the topics and assessments required for any future planning application.
Likely local questions about traffic, schools, healthcare and other infrastructure.
No formal timetable yet for a full planning application or public consultation.

National headlines: why they matter in Surrey
New Ofgem protections for heat network customers
Heat networks across Great Britain are now regulated by Ofgem, giving over 500,000 customers access to price protections and a formal complaints route via the Energy Ombudsman. For Surrey flats and estates on communal systems, this is the first time you have gas-style consumer rights.

Pubs and live music venues rates relief
A new 15 percent business rates relief for eligible pubs and grassroots live music venues in 2026ā27 has been confirmed, with bills then frozen in real terms for the following two years. That should give Surrey landlords and venue owners a bit more certainty when the sums get done.
Fixed-rate mortgages dipping towards 3.5 percent
Best buy two year fixes are now around 3.5 percent and five year fixes about 3.69 percent, the lowest since 2022, while the Bank of England base rate sits at 3.75 percent ahead of its 5 February decision. Around 1.8 million fixed deals end this year, including many in Surrey.

š¢ A Message from Barucci London
If you speak to the people who always look effortlessly put together, the sharpest wardrobes for 2026 are already being built right now, in the quiet of January.
Here is the case for the early fitting
Fit That Holds Its Shape
Great tailoring is not rushed. A clean silhouette needs time for measuring, cutting, and refining, so your jacket sits right, your trouser line stays crisp, and everything feels natural.
Event Ready Without Panic
Weddings, black tie, business travel, awards dinners, board meetings, they arrive quickly once the year picks up. Getting your core pieces underway early means you are choosing outfits, not scrambling.
Details That Make It Yours
Buttons, lapels, lining, monograms, collar shape, cuff style, these decisions land best when you are not squeezed between deadlines. January gives you the calm window to get everything right.
Ultimately, dressing well is preparation. A properly fitted suit or coat is not an extra, it is a quiet advantage.
If you want to avoid the usual pre season rush, a quick chat with the team at Barucci London is a smart way to start the year.
