Those intending to travel through Guildford on Sunday 18 October would be wise to consult their railway arrangements before venturing forth. South Western Railway has confirmed engineering works affecting services in the Guildford area, with altered journeys and replacement transport on certain routes.
When: Sunday 18 October 2026.
Where: Guildford-area rail routes, depending upon the individual journey.
What changes: Some passengers will require alternative services or replacement transport.
What to do: Check the latest timetable before departure, particularly when making connections.

National headlines for Surrey
Ofgem consults tariffs with different day rates

Ofgem has opened a consultation concerning how time-of-use electricity tariffs should operate within the energy price cap framework.
Such tariffs charge different rates depending upon when electricity is consumed. For households already using, or considering, these arrangements, the proposals warrant a little attention.
Electricity pricing is quite complicated enough without mistaking a proposal for an accomplished fact. For now, nothing in this consultation should be regarded as an immediate change to one's tariff.
Great Western Railway's public transfer confirmed
The Department for Transport has confirmed that Great Western Railway is scheduled to move into public ownership on 13 December 2026. The announcement is relevant to Surrey passengers travelling on North Downs services, although it concerns the railway's ownership rather than an immediate alteration to the everyday timetable.
In short, the ownership may change, but passengers should not assume that their usual train will suddenly depart at a more convenient hour.

County Updates
Council Tax Reduction consultations remain open
Residents have until Thursday 3 December to comment on proposals concerning Council Tax Reduction arrangements across the two new Surrey council areas. The consultations examine how support for eligible households might operate in future. They do not announce an immediate change to anyone's present entitlement.
Community improvement grants Reigate & Banstead
Community organisations across Reigate and Banstead may express interest in council grants intended to improve local community assets. The current funding round supports eligible capital improvements, rather than ordinary day-to-day running expenses.
Grant range: £3,000 to £20,000.
Deadline: Monday 2 November 2026 for expressions of interest.
Purpose: Physical improvements to community assets.
Who should investigate: Eligible community groups with suitable projects.
For those responsible for a much-loved community building or facility requiring attention, this may prove a useful opportunity. And whilst paperwork rarely inspires spontaneous celebration, the prospect of a repaired or improved community space is certainly something worth pursuing.

Surrey's 2-week October half-term begins on Monday
For parents across Surrey, the approach of half-term is accompanied by that familiar mixture of anticipation, logistical planning and the occasional prolonged examination of the family calendar.
Surrey's community and voluntary-controlled schools finish on Friday 16 October, with half-term running from Monday 19 to Friday 30 October. The next term begins on Monday 2 November.

Outdoors

One trusts the weather will observe the appropriate standards of hospitality.
Theatre & Performances
Down to Chance | Friday 16 October (Tickets)
Location: The Horton, Epsom
Description: A 70-minute theatrical account of the 1964 Alaskan earthquake and the role played by radio communication in the relief effort. An unusual and moving subject for the stage, examining the human experience behind an extraordinary historical event. Tickets are £21, with student tickets at £14.
An Evening with Sir Derek Jacobi and Richard Clifford | Saturday 17 October (Tickets)
Location: Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford
Description: An evening of conversation exploring acting, Shakespeare and a distinguished career spanning stage and screen. For those who relish the theatre, hearing the stories behind the performances can be every bit as absorbing as the performances themselves. Tickets start at £34. One suspects the conversation will be rather more distinguished than the average Saturday gathering around the television.
Comedy
How Lovely | 16–18 October weekend (Tickets)
Location: Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford
Description: Comedian Daniel Foxx brings his stand-up performance to Guildford. Readers should consult the theatre's booking page for the precise performance session and available ticket options. For those who favour an evening of amusement over another lengthy discussion about household administration, comedy may be the more civilised choice.
Namaste | 16–18 October weekend (Tickets)
Location: Cranleigh Arts, Cranleigh
Description: Cally Beaton presents a sharper-edged stand-up performance for audiences who appreciate their comedy with a little more bite. The organiser's listing provides details of the performance time and any age guidance. The title, one might observe, is not quite what one expects to encounter on an invitation to a royal garden party. Still, variety is rather the point of a good cultural calendar.
Music & Gigs
Live Music with Anouska Assisi | 16–18 October weekend (Tickets)
Location: Cranleigh Arts, Cranleigh
Description: A live musical performance offering an evening's entertainment at Cranleigh Arts. Consult the venue's event page for the precise performance arrangements and ticket information. Freedom Fields 20th Anniversary | 16–18 October weekend (Tickets)
Location: Farnham Maltings, Farnham
Description: Seth Lakeman marks twenty years of Freedom Fields with a live performance. A promising choice for folk music enthusiasts, particularly those who appreciate music with strong storytelling at its heart. There is something rather fitting about folk music in an English autumn. The two have maintained a thoroughly respectable acquaintance for centuries.
Special Events
October Sound Bath | 16–18 October weekend (Tickets)
Location: Cranleigh Arts, Cranleigh
Description: A sound-based relaxation session for those seeking a quieter form of weekend activity. Prospective participants should consult the organiser's guidance, including any stated health precautions, before booking. The Eclectics Art Exhibition | October 2026 (Info)
Location: The Horton, Epsom
Description: An art exhibition offering a quieter cultural diversion for visitors interested in the visual arts. Consult the venue's exhibition page for available visiting dates and accessibility information. Positano Italian Restaurant | Weekend Dining (Menu/Bookings)
Location: Guildford
Description: Positano offers an Italian dining option for those arranging a weekend meal with family, friends or acquaintances whose company has been rather too long neglected. The restaurant provides menu information and online reservations. Italian cuisine has a commendable talent for bringing people together around a table, although persuading everyone to agree upon a restaurant beforehand remains one of life's more formidable diplomatic exercises.
Quick Hits
Olivo | Italian Dining (Menus)

The White Horse | Pub Dining (Menus)
Location: Dorking
Description: A pub and hotel-style dining option, with menus published online. Worth considering when planning a meal in Dorking, particularly if one prefers to peruse the menu before leaving home. It is always prudent to establish the culinary arrangements before committing oneself to an expedition.
The Watermill | Weekend Dining (Menus)
Location: Dorking

Directory
Surrey Heating Specialists | Heating Services (Enquiries)
Location: Ashford
Description: Boiler servicing, heating repairs and installation enquiries. A practical contact for households considering planned heating work or seeking a quotation for repairs. As the autumn evenings grow cooler, a dependable heating system becomes rather more than a domestic convenience. One would prefer the boiler to perform its duties without requiring a formal written invitation.
Boilergurus | Boiler Repairs & Servicing (Enquiries)
Location: Old Woking
Description: Boiler repairs, servicing and installations, including an advertised emergency enquiry service. Readers should confirm actual attendance arrangements and the relevant engineer's qualifications directly. Heating systems, regrettably, have never shown particular respect for the convenience of their owners, often choosing the chilliest morning to make their displeasure known.
Surrey Stitch | Tailoring & Repairs (Enquiries)
Location: Ewell / Epsom
Description: Clothing repairs, dress alterations and tailoring services. A practical option for adjustments to everyday garments as well as more formal attire. There is considerable satisfaction in rescuing a favourite piece of clothing rather than consigning it prematurely to retirement. Even the finest garments occasionally require a little diplomatic adjustment.
Hazelden Tech Solutions | Phone & Device Repairs (Repairs)
Location: Redhill
Description: Repairs for mobile phones and other electronic devices, with service information available online. A useful contact when a broken screen or unreliable device begins interfering with ordinary household arrangements. Modern technology is a marvellous thing, provided it continues to do what it was purchased to do, an expectation which occasionally appears rather ambitious.
Click Tech Repair Centre | Electronics Repairs (Enquiries)
Location: Reigate
Description: Phone, computer and other electronic-device repair enquiries. A local option for obtaining a quotation before deciding whether repair or replacement is the more sensible course. There is, after all, a certain satisfaction in repairing something rather than consigning it immediately to the back of a cupboard, where it might otherwise remain until the next century.
And Finally,
There is a peculiar pleasure in a Surrey autumn weekend when the diary has a little room to breathe. Half-term approaches, the countryside changes colour, and even the most meticulously organised household might benefit from an afternoon without appointments.
If you discover a particularly agreeable local outing, do write and tell us. The finest recommendations often begin with an ordinary neighbour's suggestion.
Until Monday, may your journeys be straightforward, your Sunday lunch unhurried and your kettle forever obliging.
Have a splendid weekend, Surrey.
