Good Evening Surrey,

The bank holiday has arrived with the usual Surrey mixture of optimism, laundry, half-term logistics and someone asking whether the M25 is “looking all right”. A brave question, really. This is the weekend where diaries start pretending to be spreadsheets, the picnic bag reappears from the back of a cupboard, and everyone remembers that “just popping out” can mean twelve minutes or half a county.

If you’re planning family days out, this is the weekend to check timings, tickets and travel before you promise anything too confidently. A25 disruption near Godstone is still one to watch, and a few attractions will be busy from Saturday morning onwards. Tell us where you’re heading, especially if you find a parking arrangement that feels almost humane.

Now in today’s edition,

  • A25 Godstone sinkhole works continue, with utilities involved

  • Free August bus travel is coming for children aged 5 to 15

  • New council structures move forward in east Surrey

  • Half-term and bank-holiday events across Surrey and just beyond

  • Starling in Esher is Restaurant of the Week

Let’s take a look.

— Prince Khurram

P.S. Our Monday Update leans more towards news, and the Friday Weekender is lighter on news and fuller on events and Eat & Drink. We would really welcome your thoughts on this format and how we can improve The Surrey Digest for you.

Surrey Police investigate Epstein-file-linked allegations

Source: Federal Bureau of Prisons, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons

Surrey Police are investigating two separate allegations of non-recent child sexual abuse connected with information from US Department of Justice files relating to Jeffrey Epstein. One report relates to locations in Surrey and Berkshire in the mid-1990s to 2000, and another to west Surrey in the mid to late 1980s.

  • No arrests have been made.

  • Police say they are looking for reasonable enquiries and corroborating evidence.

  • This is a serious item, and should be read without speculation.

A25 Godstone sinkhole works continue

Surrey County Council is still listing the A25 Godstone closure in both directions because of a large sinkhole, with SES Water, SGN and UK Power Networks involved. This is one to check before setting off, particularly if your weekend plans point east.

National headlines for Surrey

Free August bus travel announced for children

Children aged 5 to 15 are set to get free travel on participating local buses in England from 1 to 31 August 2026. For Surrey families, that could make summer day trips and childcare logistics a little less punishing.

Inflation falls to 2.8% in April

The ONS says CPI inflation was 2.8% in the 12 months to April 2026, down from 3.3% in March. That matters here because Surrey household budgets often meet mortgages, rent, fuel and food bills in one rather crowded corridor.

And Finally,

If your bank holiday plan involves “just seeing how the day goes”, may the traffic be kind, the parking machine functional and the first coffee strong enough to carry the whole operation. Surrey does this weekend well, provided nobody tries to do all of it at once.

Have a good weekend, Surrey.
