News
£1m Economic Growth Fund awards for nearly 30 Surrey businesses
Surrey County Council has announced a second £1m round of Economic Growth Fund support for almost 30 local firms, including businesses in Guildford and Godalming. The money is aimed at creating jobs, backing town-centre activity and helping companies invest in new kit and space.
Here is what you need to know
Second-round awards take total Economic Growth Fund investment past £3m.
Nearly 30 firms share the £1m across manufacturing, creative and service sectors.
Funding supports premises upgrades, new equipment and expansion, creating jobs and apprenticeships.
Further rounds are expected, Surrey firms should start shaping potential bids now.
£10m fund to boost UK semiconductor development
Government has launched a £10m fund to help up to 40 UK semiconductor businesses turn research into commercial products and strengthen the domestic chip sector. It’s a small sum by global standards, but part of a wider push to reduce reliance on fragile supply chains.
Here is what you need to know:
Targets small and mid-sized firms in chip design, materials and specialised technologies.
Semiconductors are a strategic growth sector with demand set to surge this decade.
Sits alongside wider efforts to reduce UK exposure to global chip shortages in cars and electronics.
For Surrey tech workers and investors, a stronger UK chip ecosystem underpins hardware from phones and cars to medical kit and data centres.
EU renews UK data adequacy for another six years
The European Commission has renewed its data-adequacy decisions for the UK, allowing personal data to keep flowing freely between the UK and the EU/EEA until 2031, despite the UK’s new Data Use and Access Act. For most Surrey organisations, that means no new data-transfer friction.
Here is what it means Surrey firms:
Renewal covers GDPR-style personal data and Law Enforcement Directive data.
Brussels deems UK rules “essentially equivalent” to EU’s - review due in four years.
Data Use and Access Act makes targeted tweaks for research, fundraising and public-sector use, not a full rewrite.
For Surrey’s legal, finance, academic, charity and cloud-heavy SMEs, this avoids fresh cross-border data compliance churn.

Whats is the Dress Code for Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot for men?
The Royal Enclosure is one of the few places left where the dress code still does some heavy lifting. For men, that means full morning dress, worn properly, with very little room for improvisation.
Here’s what you should know
Morning coat in black, grey or navy with traditional striped formal trousers.
Waistcoat, collared shirt with double cuffs and a conventional tie (no cravats or bow ties).
Black or grey top hat, worn with the outfit and only removed in the limited indoor areas where it’s allowed.
Black formal shoes with socks that cover the ankle; trainers, loafers-with-no-socks and casual styles don’t make the cut.
Formal national dress or service dress is acceptable as an alternative to morning dress.
If you’d like some help getting the details right, contact the team at HIRE5 Menswear to talk through Royal Ascot options.

County Updates
Surrey councils take next step towards East and West unitaries
Surrey’s move from twelve councils to two new “East Surrey” and “West Surrey” unitaries has taken a formal step forward, with joint committees now meeting and a clearer timetable for elections and service transfer. This is the structural change that will eventually reshape bins, roads, planning and more.
Here is what you need to know
New voluntary joint committees for East Surrey and West Surrey have held their first meetings to plan how services will move across.
Elections to the new unitary councils are planned for May 2026, giving over a year for parties and residents to prepare.
The main transfer of services from existing district and borough councils is scheduled for April 2027, so day-to-day arrangements stay as they are for now.

January bus timetable changes for Falcon and Stagecoach routes
Surrey County Council has published January timetable changes affecting Stagecoach services in the Farnham area and Falcon routes 28 and 437 around Woking and Guildford. The tweaks are mostly about reliability and coverage, but they may shift departure times for regular journeys.
Here is what you need to know
Stagecoach routes in Farnham area moved to new timetables from 5 Jan 2026.
Falcon routes 28 and 437 change from 19 January 2026, with route 437 no longer serving Kingfield Green.
Some early-morning and evening journeys have been retimed, which could affect connections to rail services.

Community Digest
Guildford Library, digital buddies and Library of Things
Guildford Library now doubles as a small support hub as well as a place for books, with digital volunteers helping residents navigate online tasks and a Library of Things for borrowing kit instead of buying.
Here is what you need to know
Digital Support Volunteers offer one-to-one help with phones, tablets, online forms, benefits and everyday digital admin.
The Library of Things lends tools, gadgets and household equipment on a donation-based model rather than standard hire fees.
Both services run alongside normal library opening hours, with a mix of bookable and drop-in slots.
The scheme ties into wider work on digital inclusion, reuse and active lifestyles in Guildford.
