Good Morning Surrey,
We have reached that hazy stretch between Christmas and New Year where the roads are unpredictable and bin day is more of an estimate than a deadline. But while we navigate the local roadworks and calendar confusion, there is some welcome news to take into 2026.
Mortgage rates are easing, offering some relief to homeowners, and regulated rail fares in England are now frozen through 2026. While it won't turn January into a summer holiday, it does stop the New Year from feeling quite so much like an endurance test.
On a lighter note, if you’ve discovered a great lunch hideout in the last few weeks, are you sharing the secret, or keeping it to yourself? (Hint: Hit reply and give us the name; we’d love to check it out.)
In Today’s Edition,
Base rate cut and what it could mean for mortgages and savings

Holiday events, New Year dining ideas, jobs, trusted services, and Surrey’s Past
Let’s take a look.

Bank of England cuts interest rate to 3.75%
The Bank of England has reduced the base rate from 4.0% per cent to 3.75%, following its December decision. For Surrey households, even a quarter-point shift can show up quickly on tracker and variable-rate mortgages. The Bank’s message remains “gradual and data-dependent”, rather than a sprint back to ultra-low rates.
Here is what it means for you:
You’ll likely see tracker and variable rate changes reflected almost immediately.
This cut brings the base rate to its lowest level since early 2023.
If you’re on a Fixed-rate Mortgage, the shifts are also based on market expectations rather than just the headline decision.
Your savings rates follow with a lag and don’t always reflect the full reduction.
Rail fares in England frozen until March 2027

Source: South Western Railway (Edited)
Regulated rail fares in England are being frozen until March 2027 (government calls it the first national rail fare freeze in 30 years). This should bring some overdue predictability for commuters using season and flexi-season tickets on routes like Woking to London Waterloo. It’s a pause on future rises, rather than a roll-back of recent increases but for regular travellers it still matters.
Here is how the freeze will affect your journeys.
The Freeze will apply to Regulated Fares Only, including most of your season tickets and peak commuter returns, are now frozen throughout England
Unregulated fares, such as your advance or promotional tickets, aren't covered and may still fluctuate
If your use London Underground, note TfL fares are not affected by this policy.
The practical impact will vary by route and how often you travel.

How Black Tie is Becoming Go-To Choice for Grooms in the UK
If you’re planning a 2026 wedding, you may have noticed the mood shifting: less “rustic weekend away”, more “proper occasion”. One of the simplest ways to set that tone is black tie, not because it’s flashy, but because it’s clear. A lounge suit can look like workwear with better shoes. A dinner suit says, this is the day.
Here’s why it’s landing with more grooms:
You stay clearly “the groom”. A navy suit can look like a good Tuesday. A dinner suit reads celebration, not meeting.
You won’t hate the photos later. Trends come with an expiry date. Black tie tends to outlive them (and your best man’s opinions).
You match the level of the dress. Bridal looks are often structured and high-glamour; black tie holds its own without competing.
You set the tone for the room. When you raise the bar, guests usually follow, which is how you end up with fewer “smart trainers” in the background.
If you want to build something that fits properly, photographs well, and still feels like you, a quick chat with Barucci is a reasonable place to start.

Surrey Past & Present

Guildford Railway Station 1958. Photo By: Ben Brooksbank
Guildford railway station, 180 years on the rails
Guildford railway station has been the town’s rail front door since 1845, when the first trains began arriving and departing by the River Wey. What started as a modest stop on the edge of a market town is now one of Surrey’s busiest everyday gateways. Recent anniversary events have also nudged it into life as a small scale heritage site, not just a place to change trains.
Opened on 5 May 1845, linking Guildford into the growing national rail network
Helped shift Guildford from quiet market town to busy, rail linked centre
New heritage timeline panel and time capsule now sit on the platform
Researchers are using Guildford’s story to highlight the lives of local railway staff

Guildford bin collections over Christmas and New Year
Guildford Borough Council has published the festive timetable for rubbish and recycling collections over Christmas and New Year. Collection days move around, and there’s also a short pause on garden waste, so it’s worth checking your address rather than trusting muscle memory.
The schedule covers winter 2025 to 2026.
No garden waste collections between 29 December and 9 January.
Many streets have temporary day changes around the festive period.
The online bin day finder and downloadable calendar are the quickest way to confirm
A320 corridor & north-west Surrey – speed-limit proposals and traffic orders
Surrey County Council has a cluster of live consultations and traffic regulation orders affecting the A320 corridor and nearby routes around Ottershaw, Chertsey, Woking and M25 Junction 11. These cover new or reduced speed limits and layout tweaks on key local roads.
Proposed 20mph and 30mph limits are set for Laleham, Virginia Water, Englefield Green, Egham, and Chertsey.
New traffic orders also cover the A320 and key connecting routes like Brox Road and Holloway Hill.
You have until late January 2026 to share your views before the various consultation deadlines close.
These are currently proposals, so you won't see physical on-street changes until later in 2026.

Thank for reading. See you on Wednesday.
