Good Morning Surrey,
Friday has arrived. The countryside is beginning to look rather splendid, local theatres are keeping the evenings occupied, and the household paperwork continues to multiply with quiet determination. There are decisions to make about money, outings and the occasional meal that doesn't involve washing up. Nothing particularly alarming, just the usual business of keeping life moving while everyone else seems to have a different plan.
If you're travelling through Guildford this weekend, do check your train before leaving home. Engineering works on Saturday and Sunday could turn a simple journey into something considerably more complicated, and replacement buses are rarely anyone's preferred weekend activity. Are your plans affected, or have you found a better way around the disruption? Sometimes a successful weekend is simply getting where you intended without too much fuss.
Now in today’s edition..
Guildford rail engineering and proposed protections for private renters.
Council tax consultations open across East and West Surrey.
Halloween family trails, theatre, music and art exhibitions.
Ripley Farmers' Market on Saturday morning.
Five local dining options, from tasting menus to traditional pub food.
Local tailoring, technology repairs and laundry services.
Let’s take a look.

National headlines for Surrey
Stronger protections proposed for private renters

The government has announced a consultation on extending Awaab's Law protections to the private rented sector. Published on 8 October, the proposals could eventually affect Surrey landlords and tenants by introducing enforceable timescales for dealing with certain serious housing hazards.
What's proposed: Stronger requirements to address specified dangerous housing conditions.
Who may benefit: More than five million additional households nationally.
Current position: The proposed protections are not yet in force for private tenants.
What happens next: Consultation responses will inform further government decisions.
For private renters concerned about serious damp, mould or other housing hazards, the proposals are worth understanding. They should not, however, be mistaken for rules already in effect.

Read less, know more.
That's it. That’s the pitch.

And Finally,
October weekends in Surrey have a particular talent for making everyone feel they should be doing something wholesome. A country walk, perhaps, or a market visit, followed by a proper lunch somewhere with actual napkins.
Of course, there is also a perfectly respectable alternative involving the kettle, a comfortable chair and absolutely no timetable.
Whatever you choose, may the weather behave, the parking be straightforward and the journey home involve the transport you originally expected.
Let's catch up on Monday.
