TOGETHER WITH

Good Morning Surrey,

On a Wednesday in Surrey, this is usually the point where one road closure, one school message and one half-made weekend plan all end up in the same place, somewhere near the kettle. You can picture it. The route you use without thinking suddenly needs thinking about.

So today’s brief is built for that kind of week. The aim is simple, sort the disruption that will actually affect your days, flag the council moves worth knowing about, and point you to the bookings and support links you may want before they become a scramble.

In today’s edition,

  • Closures begin on Chinthurst Lane, with disruption around Shalford and Bramley

  • Dorking Halls confirms its April closure date for a long refurbishment spell

  • Guildford, and Epsom & Ewell both move ahead on local governance changes

  • Community support this week includes library reading, crisis help and food hubs

  • Easter and spring bookings are starting to stack up

Let’s take a look.

News

Chinthurst Lane closures are now under way

Source: Google Maps

Gas works around Shalford and Bramley have moved from notice to reality, with Chinthurst Lane now set for a long stretch of disruption. If your week depends on one reliable route, this is the kind of change that starts quietly and then takes over the school run.

  • SGN works started on Monday 23 March.

  • Chinthurst Lane is under a rolling road closure for about 10 weeks.

  • The stretch runs between The Common and around 100 metres past Poplar Road.

  • A separate closure at the Poplar Road junction is expected for around two weeks

  • That is likely to become a regular part of local route planning for a while.

Dorking Halls confirms April closure for refurbishment

Dorking Halls has now put firm dates around its temporary shutdown, which turns this from a general notice into something more practical. For regular attenders, it is the point where spring bookings and diary plans may need a second look.

  • The venue will close on Sunday 19 April 2026.

  • Reopening is currently expected in mid-December 2026.

  • The works cover refurbishment and sustainability upgrades.

  • The council update describes the closure as running from 19 April to early December.

The main thing now is timing, especially for anything you meant to catch there before Easter has passed.

National Headlines

Two-child limit ends from 6 April

The change has now passed into law, with Royal Assent given on 18 March and commencement set for 6 April. For Surrey households keeping a close eye on what really changes the monthly sums, this is one of the bigger policy shifts now moving from headline to reality.

County Updates

Guildford backs a parish council plan for the town

Source: Guildford Borough Council

Guildford has moved a step further on plans tied to the future West Surrey shadow authority, with councillors recommending the creation of a parish council for Guildford Town. It sits in the local-governance file, which can sound procedural until it starts shaping how decisions are made.

  • Councillors considered consultation feedback on 16 March 2026.

  • The recommendation is for a parish council to be created from 1 April 2027.

  • Up to £300,000 in start-up funding was approved.

  • That funding would apply if the shadow authority proceeds.

There is still a formal process to follow, but the direction is clearer now.

Mole Valley approves the next step on the A24 PSPO

Mole Valley has approved a Public Spaces Protection Order around the A24 corridor near Mickleham and Westhumble, although it cannot be introduced until the call-in window has passed. So the decision has been made, but there is still one more formal step before it takes effect.

  • Cabinet approved the PSPO on 17 March 2026.

  • Implementation must wait until after the call-in period.

  • The area includes Givons Grove and Denbies roundabouts.

  • It also covers Old London Road, Zig Zag Road and Ryka’s Café car park for three years once introduced.

For residents and regular visitors, the main point is that the policy is now much closer to becoming real.

Community Digest

Surrey Crisis Fund can help in an immediate financial emergency

This is one worth keeping somewhere easy to find rather than assuming you will remember it later. The Surrey Crisis Fund is for people facing an immediate financial crisis, and it can also help with setting up home in the community in some circumstances.

Here’s how it works / what’s on offer:

  • You must usually be at least 16.

  • You need to live in Surrey, or be moving there soon.

  • Eligibility includes people on means-tested benefits.

  • It may also help where someone cannot access sufficient funds.

  • Support can include help linked to setting up a home in the community.

Dorking Community Fridge has weekday opening times in place

This remains one of the more straightforward community offers in the county, which is part of why it is useful. The service is free for everyone and runs from Dorking Christian Centre with regular weekday sessions.

Westfield Community Fridge opens on Wednesday afternoons

For anyone in or around Westfield, this is a simple weekly option to keep in mind. It is free to everyone and runs from St Mark’s Church on Westfield Road, with the current session listed for Wednesdays from 1.30pm to 3pm.

Runnymede Foodbank continues Monday referral sessions in Egham

For residents who may need it, or for anyone helping somebody else navigate support, this one is referral-based and currently listed at Virginia Lodge in Egham on Monday mornings.

Restaurant of the Week | RHS Wisley Dining Club

Location: RHS Garden Wisley, Wisley
Description: This is less a quick midweek supper and more a planned evening out for people who like their food with a bit of occasion attached. The next sitting is listed for Thursday 2 April, 6pm to 10pm, which makes it useful if you are already thinking ahead to early spring outings rather than waiting until every decent table has vanished.

The appeal here is the setting as much as the meal, and the general Wisley advantage is that even the journey there can feel mildly restorative if the week has been full of screens and logistics. Worth noting that this is one to book rather than wing. In Surrey, that is often the difference between a pleasant evening and telling yourself a sandwich was always the plan.

And finally,

By this point in March, Surrey starts asking you to leave the house prepared for three versions of the same day. Sun, cloud, a delayed route, a changed plan. The trick is not winning that argument, just packing for it. As ever, send over any tips, corrections or local finds you think we should have on the list next time.

Thank you for reading. See you on Friday.
