Good Morning Surrey!

You know that moment when you’re half out the door, keys in hand, and someone says, “Have you checked the roads?” Tonight it’s the A3 southbound past Guildford, and by the weekend it’s the usual question of what the River Wey and the muddy footpaths are planning.

We’ve pulled the practical bits to the top, then stacked the rest with useful community links and a few good reasons to leave the house anyway.

In today’s edition

• Woking hotel cladding works, with a permanent repair now agreed
• A3 southbound overnight closure, with a diversion through Guildford
• Weekend weather and flood alerts, especially for riverside routes
• Warm spaces, term dates, community fridge, and home repair support
• Late February markets, gigs, and a few solid weekend plans

Let’s take a look.

P.S. Our Monday Update leans more towards news, the Wednesday Midweek Brief balances news and events, and the Friday Weekender is lighter on news and fuller on events and Eat & Drink. We would really welcome your thoughts on this format and how we can improve The Surrey Digest for you.

Community Digest

Spring term dates for Surrey schools

Surrey County Council has published term dates for 2025 to 2026, including this week’s half term and the end of the spring term. It is a useful reference if you are trying to line up annual leave, childcare or travel with school breaks. Remember that academies, free schools and some voluntary aided schools can set their own pattern.

Warm Welcome venues through to the end of March

The county’s Warm Welcome scheme runs through to 31 March, with a network of venues across Surrey offering warm spaces, hot drinks and a bit of company. You can browse by borough, including Guildford, then drill down to individual locations and opening times.

Guildford community fridge at The Hive

Guildford’s community fridge at The Hive in Park Barn helps reduce food waste by sharing surplus food with local residents. The council page gives the address, bus routes and opening hours, including slightly shorter hours on Fridays. It is open to anyone who can use the food, no referral needed.

Care and Repair help for home adaptations

Guildford Borough Council’s Care and Repair team supports older and disabled residents with small repairs, safety improvements and adaptations, from grab rails and ramps to energy efficiency tweaks. The service can also advise on grants and works alongside Waverley’s handy-person scheme.

And Finally,

Late February in this part of Surrey tends to blur into one long damp afternoon, with school bags still full of half term leaflets and a faint smell of wet dog in the hallway. The upside is that the first proper runs of markets, gigs and tastings start to appear on the calendar, even if you still need a scarf to get there.

If your idea of a good weekend is a pit stop challenge, a candlelit concert or simply finding a warm chair and a quiet coffee, I hope you manage one small thing that feels like yours. And if you’ve got a favourite warm space or coffee spot that quietly gets you through late winter, hit reply and tell us about it.

Have a good weekend, Surrey.
